Central Campus Classes: Fashion Design & Merchandising
Ever since I was little fashion has interested me. I've always loved picking out my clothes and creating my own sense of style. I remember going to the Central Campus fashion show in middle school, in awe at all of the amazing garments high school students made!
I knew I wanted to do the fashion program, but was nervous that it was too much of a commitment or would take up too much of my schedule. Although it is a lot of class periods, I've still been able to have a full schedule, challenging myself academically. It's actually helped my learning as I get to spend a good portion of my school day doing something creative and working with my hands. I feel more well-rounded as a learner. According to NAGC, gifted learners have creativeness and inventiveness. This class allows for gifted students to tap into this skill.
Taking a course at Central Campus was one of the best decisions I've made in high school. It has been so fun to learn how to sew, make close friends with students from other high schools, and be a part of the fashion show. I know there are plenty of other programs for students with different interests: culinary, careers in health, marine biology, radio and film, graphic design, and more. If any of these things seem slightly interesting to you my advice is to try it. I don't think I'll go into fashion as a career, but the skills I've learned in this course I'll use for the rest of my life. Not only do I now have excellent sewing skills (thanks to Mrs. Holland), I've learned how to be punctual with deadlines and work with others, even when it is be super difficult. In addition, my Central Campus classes have been much more diverse than others and I've made close friendships with people I wouldn't have met otherwise. Finally, it's just been such a fun class to take. It's very hands on- you get create your own clothing.
In conclusion: IF IT INTERESTS YOU, TRY IT!
