TRHS Club Highlight: Best Buddies/Unified Sports

Best Buddies is a club that promotes promotes friendship and inclusion with students who have intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). The club hosts events every month, with an extremely popular event in February. The Rider Pride game is an annual game where students with IDD partner up with TRHS basketball team players and have a scrimmage. It is extremely heart-warming, and many students label Rider Pride as their favorite night of the year.

Best Buddies has been increasingly improving its role at Roosevelt. While it has always been great, this year it offers Unified Sports for the first time. The initiator for Unified Sports is senior Evie Sly. While Rider Pride is amazing at giving students with IDD a super special night, it does alienate them for the rest of the TRHS student body. Now, students with IDD can play on Unified Sports teams, share classes with students who do not have IDD, and more. Students at Roosevelt are generally super respectful and rarely use slurs. However, Best Buddies members must be ready to stand up for students with IDD and promote kindness and inclusion.

Anyone looking for more clubs to join at Roosevelt should consider Best Buddies. In today's generation it is ignorant and naive to assume that people IDD do not able to clue into the baises formed around them . It disspells these misconceptions. Additionally, many buddy pairs have made life long friends.

Best Buddies is also centered around a campaign titled Spread the Word to End the Word. Using the word "r*tard" is completely outdated and ignorant. Best Buddies Club helps educate on why this is. An important technique of educating people to keep in mind is to avoid anger/argument right off the bat. This leads to further polarization and no progress being made. Best Buddies explains how and why the term is outdated and how it is hurtful to people when it is used.

Finally, Best Buddies is a great club because people are welcoming and warm when they attend meetings/events. There is a shared understanding of how to only be kind during club events, and it is extremely therapeutic. The outside world can be a little harsh sometimes, but club members ensure a safe space for those who want to be involved.
