Why You Should Pick Up an Instrument

I started playing piano in 2nd grade. This past year I've slowed down with practicing as my teacher is gone for the semester, and I've already noticed a shift in my mental sharpness. Some might call placebo but there is a strong connection between music and mathematics that has been scientifically studied for years.

Learning to play a musical instrument requires concepts that are also seen in math like counting, patterns and fractions. Students who are musically trained have been observed to have higher mathematics grades and standardized test scores, compared with students who have not studied music. While this conclusion is still debated, it is clear that there is a link between the two mediums.

In addition to helping your brain learn, music is simply enjoyable. Sitting down at the piano and making music with my own two hands is somehthing that never gets boring. I reccomend picking up an instrument- no matter how old you are or how seriously you take it. It will help you become a better learner.

  1. Are there ways high school students can become involved in music if they have never played before?

    1. Students can sign up for band or orchestra, but I'm not exactly sure the requirements. Otherwise music can be easy to explore indepently of class- I know there are a variety of youtube videos and websites that provide instructions on how to play, or students could sign up for private lessons. Des Moines has a pretty solid music scene, with opportunities for a variety of skill levels.
