TRHS Sport Highlight: Cross Country

If one were to ask any Roosevelt student about what stands out from the girls cross country team, they would say either enthusiasm for running or the support that teammates show fellow peers. In my experience, the cross country team has stepped in as a second family. The girls show kindness like no other group of girls. I have run for all four years of high school and can attribute a good half of my close friends to the team.

As for the actual logistics of the running, we run six times a week. During week days, we run after school for about an hour to an hour and a half and then we practice at 10am on Saturdays. A big time portion of cross country is during the summer. While practice is optional, many runners try to act as though it is mandatory because improvement comes with consistency. The summer is also a foundational time for the team because we do team-bonding events and a four day retreat. We have meets usually once a week, although we occasionally will have two meets in one week. Each week consists of three recovery days, two workout days, and one long run day.

I never realized how important team culture on a team was until I tried other sports following my first fall on the team. There is a distinctly unique culture between runners. People connect over the love for working hard and shared pain. Accompanying the grit is a profound sense of compassion that stretches out to each and every team member. Alongside with running, our team is taught how to look out for each other and help fellow teammates in need. I would recommend cross country to anyone!

  1. How will participation in a sport like this help students in the future? How would you connect the importance of doing a sport to the traits of a GT student?
